Netflix and 1492 PICTURES Sign First-Look Feature Film Deal

Fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus … inked a deal with Netflix?

That’s right, the streaming giant has secured a multi-year deal with Chris Columbus and partners, Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe, all of 1492 Pictures. The deal allows Netflix to get a first look at any feature film from the company that it may seek to produce.

“Partnering with Netflix is a thrilling and exciting opportunity for 1492 Pictures,” Columbus said. “Being able to create original content on a major motion picture scale is a rarity in Hollywood these days. But not at Netflix. They encourage original ideas and visionary filmmaking. The executives at Netflix are great people who support some of the world’s greatest filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Alfonso Cuaron.”

Columbus is responsible for writing numerous original scripts in his leap to prominence, including Gremlins, The Goonies and Young Sherlock Holmes. His directorial credits include gems like Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire.

The studio, which was founded in 1994, has churned out such films as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, The Help, Night at the Museum, Fantastic Four and I Kill Giants. It also has churned out holiday favorites like Jingle All the Way, Christmas with the Kranks and, most recently, The Christmas Chronicles, starring Kurt Russell as Santa Claus.
