The Road To AVENGERS: ENDGAME – Let’s Speed It Up A Bit

Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame finally releases in theater tomorrow, and standing at 3 hours and 2 minutes, there is a lot to process. We have already done Captain America, Captain Marvel and Iron Man, but those are a little more in depth than they needed to be.

That’s why this post will be a little bit more different. Instead of a post dedicated to each MCU movie, let’s condense them and give you just the information you need heading right into Avengers: Endgame.

The Incredible Hulk

The Incredible Hulk, while not pushing the Infinity Saga’s narrative along whatsoever, is a great introduction of our jolly green giant. Edward Norton’s take on the Hulk is a solid performance and it brings in our titular hero and introduces him to the MCU is a post-origin story. He would only have the Bruce Banner/Hulk persona for this movie, only to have Mark Ruffalo take the reins and own the character from there.

Again, the overall arc of the story really surrounds a matter of days, as a troubled, on-the-run fugitive in Bruce Banner, desperately trying to cure the curse within. His bouts with General Ross lead to them being more at odds with one another, only reconciling at the end for Banner’s battle with the Abomination.

This is the last we see from Ross for a bit, only to see him come back into the light during Captain America: Civil War and again in the Avengers HQ in Infinity War.

Assuming at the end of this and then his resurface in the beginning the The Avengers, Banner travels around the world. Heading from Canada to Calcutta, India in the beginning of The Avengers.

Key Characters Introduced:

  • Bruce Banner/The Hulk
  • Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross

Infinity Stones Introduced (1/6):

  • Space Stone
  • Reality Stone
  • Power Stone
  • Mind Stone
  • Time Stone
  • Soul Stone

Iron Man 2

Back in the world of Tony Stark, we find a more-experienced, yet still impulsive titular hero.

Dealing with an unanticipated threat of the arc reactor now poisoning him, Stark’s behavior becomes erratic. With Nick Fury installing Natasha Romanoff in a behind the scenes type deal, Tony now begins to deal with a fight for his life.

Of course, you have Romanoff becoming Black Widow and you also have Senator Stern, who in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, showed his allegiance to HYDRA. Not a major tie in to Endgame, but a fun little tidbit.

The biggest connection comes from Tony’s revelation of Howard Stark’s Tesseract research and the creation of the new element (dubbed ‘Badassium’) and leading to the new and improved arc reactor. Some would theorize that the new arc reactor is a way to harness the power of the Tesseract/Space Stone and maybe a further key in some developments of Endgame.

  • Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow
  • United States Senator Stern

Infinity Stones Introduced (1/6):

Thor

Taking the MCU to another world was bound to happen, and this is where Kenneth Branagh’s Thor comes to play. Outcasted to Earth from the breathtaking Asgard, Thor is arrogant and misguided soon-to-be king who’s ego is greater than his power.

With Mjolnir firmly placed in the ground, Thor begins to attract some attention from S.H.I.E.L.D. and again, Agent Coulson, who seizes the information by the researching team of Jane Foster, Dr. Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis.

Meanwhile, Loki begins to discover his hidden past. His blood is that of Jotunheim, and him striking a deal with the Frost Giants to kill Odin and take back their power from the “Casket of Ancient Winters” since Odin has fallen into a deep sleep after sending Thor to Earth.

Really, the movie does a great job of introducing a lot of characters in Thor’s circle. Jane has disappeared, with a small mention in Avengers: Age of Ultron but nothing really since. The real narrative pushing characters fall on Thor and Loki, but also the inclusion of Dr. Erik Selvig and his ties to The Avengers help move the arc along.

Of course, you’ll also have Heimdall who gave his life to throw Hulk from the Grandmaster’s spaceship right at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War. In doing so, Thanos proceeds to drive a spear right throught his heart.

Key Characters Introduced:

  • Thor
  • Loki
  • Erik Selvig
  • Heimdall

Infinity Stones Introduced (1/6):

  • Space Stone
  • Reality Stone
  • Power Stone
  • Mind Stone
  • Time Stone
  • Soul Stone

Avengers

Quite possibly the most ambitious crossover in cinematic history (prior to Avengers: Endgame), the first Avengers gave us a rag-tag group of heroes assembling for the very first time.

Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk (Mark Ruffalo this time), Scarlett Witch and Hawkeye all facing off against Loki and and impending Chitauri invasion.

Now, it’s already been rumored that the Battle of New York plays a part in Endgame, whether having to do with time travel or just a flashback of sorts.

In terms of characters, we aren’t introduced to many new players, being that we have spent the last 4 years building up to this moment. But we do get our introduction to Hawkeye and Maria Hill. Hawkeye is, of course, confirmed as alive, perhaps donning his Ronin persona, though undefined at this moment.

Maria, on the other hand, fades away into dust along with Nick Fury, just after he hails for Captain Marvel at the end of Infinity War.

The Avengers Assembled

The biggest reveal of it all is the one who is pulling the strings. In the mid-credit scene, somewhere deep in space, the Other is discussing with an unknown being about how the humans gave them more of a fight than promised.

“To challenge them, is to court death…”

Ladies and gentleman, we get our first look at Thanos.

Key Characters Introduced:

  • Hawkeye
  • Maria Hill
  • Thanos

Infinity Stones Introduced (1/6):

  • Space Stone
  • Reality Stone
  • Power Stone
  • Mind Stone
  • Time Stone
  • Soul Stone

With Phase I wrapped up, we have the first framework of the Avengers built, and still only one stone revealed.

Now on to Phase II….

Iron Man 3

Shane Black’s introduction into Phase II did little to push the narrative other than showing Tony Stark’s fallout from the Battle of New York. He is troubled, dealing with PTSD from nuking an entire Chitauri armor, leaving him with a grave feeling that something big is on it’s way to Earth.

Additionally, it pushes him to continue to build suit after suit. A whopping 40 iterations of different tech grace the screen of this movie, leading up to the eventual Mark 85 armor we are going to witness.

Character wise, we see a minor introduction of Harley Keener, who plays a small sidekick role and will also have an appearance in the movie, though unknown what the role will be like.

Key Characters Introduced:

  • Harley Keener

Infinity Stones Introduced (1/6):

  • Space Stone
  • Reality Stone
  • Power Stone
  • Mind Stone
  • Time Stone
  • Soul Stone

Thor: The Dark World

Ah, everyone’s favorite MCU movie to hate, Thor: The Dark World continues on with the sideline storylines featuring our favorite Norse God.

But alas, one golden moment we have in this movie is the introduction of a brand new Infinity Stone!

Through the uncovering of the Aether, an ancient power that is coveted by the Dark Elves to unleash on the Nine Realms during the Convergence.

Jane Foster finds herself right in the think of things, studying the Convergence and through researching at an abandoned factory, is transported to another dimension. It is there that the Aether sits there, hidden away for eons of time, but finally reawakened.

The ensuing battle wages on, as the realms line up, Thor emerges victorious and the Aether is transported to Knowhere. To keep the Reality Stone, housed within the Aether, apart from the Tesseract that is stored on Asgard.

Infinity Stones Introduced (1/6):

  • Reality Stone (Finally!)
  • Power Stone
  • Mind Stone

This concludes Part 1 of this connection into Avengers: Endgame. Part two will drop tomorrow as Avengers: Endgame releases on April 26th.
