Will KNIGHTS OF THE ZODIAC: SAINT SEIYA Spark New Interest In The Original?: An Anime Abstract

A new Saint Seiya series is coming to Netflix but what kind of impact will it have? After you have been a part of Manga and Anime culture long enough you are able to look at the trends, the history, and form an understanding of what happened at a deeper level. This results in an abstract idea, a thought which doesn’t have a physical existence but can be speculated. Welcome to Anime Abstract.

Saint Seiya is a long-running Shonen series, about fighters who wear armor and have the ability to tap into an internal power known as “Cosmo.” The series follows Seiya, a warrior who has sworn to guard a reincarnation of the Goddess Athena. The franchise consists of several TV series, movies, and spinoffs all centered around epic characters and high stakes actions. The series is so legendary, Tite Kubo, the creator of Bleach, sites the series as being inspirational for the creation of his own work. Unfortunately, the series doesn’t have much of a following in America.

How did such a popular show end up not gaining a bigger audience considering how much attention similar shows like Dragon Ball Z or Naruto obtained in the states? One of the biggest problems came from how it was released in the United States. The series had already established a foothold outside of Japan such as in France when it was first broadcast in 1986. In comparison, America didn’t air the series (under the title “Knights of the Zodiac”) until 2003. By then Dragon Ball Z had already established such a foothold as being the definitive action anime. An older show with retro animation and a terrible schedule (a 100+ plus episode series didn’t fare well on a late-night Saturday only timeslot) was doomed from the start. Instead of obtaining a promising release, Saint Seiya or Knights of The Zodiac fans were left to finish collecting all the Manga as the anime series was never released fully in the states in any physical form.

This brings us to the new series, debuting from Netflix titled Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac. Will the new series have enough power in it to help the original series get more exposure in America. With the effects a Netflix series have had recently it just might.

Netflix originals have helped to shine a light on the work which predated it. Thanks to the success of Ultraman, Mill Creek Entertainment has announced plans to release the entire series in the United States. Shortly after the airing of Devilman Crybaby, the original manga was released in America for the first time. It is hard to argue about the power of having a Netflix original show.

For fans of Saint Seiya, they have a bit of hope the new series will have what it takes to be the catalyst for more attention to come to their beloved series. Who knows, maybe someone time in the future, a full Blu-Ray set will available at a local Wal-Mart. Fans can dream at least.
